Really Big News: DOE may offer buyouts to ATR Teachers!

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the NYC DOE is interested in offering retirement buyouts to teachers who have been in the Absent Teacher Reserve for more than a year.

According to the report, the UFT has tried in the past to negotiate buyouts for ATR teachers, without success.  Regarding this recent offer by the DOE, UFT President Michael Mulgrew said, "We are prepared to listen."

  1. I wonder what "generous" means to Wolcott and Bloomberg?

"Generous," to them, means four years without a raise, denying all educators the salary bump all other city employees got for 08-10, proclaiming any future raises would not be retroactive, closing 24 schools for no special reason, announcing they would attempt to fire as many teachers as possible, that ATR teachers were failures, and then announcing they may, after all, uphold an agreement they made years ago.

    My advice? Sit while you wait.

  4. The media lies will fill the news tomorrow. I wonder if the UFT has the courage and political fortitude to stand-up and do the right thing for those ATRs on the job doing our best.

  5. Not true! The contract requires the DOE to put all ATRs in their district.

  8. chaz is right, contract says we must be placed in district if not given a position. the doe is obligated to place us in district where needed.

  9. Chaz is almost always right.
    The DOE would rather bribe you into retirement than let you practice your profession for the benefit of the children. As for Walcott's claim that 25% of ATR teachers have U ratings, I tend to disbelief. Even if he is technically correct, how many of those 25% were slapped with "U's" for political reasons, or simply as a personal vendetta?

  10. Im an ATR in my 7th year. I didnt choose the wrong profession. My school had Budget cuts!

    1. Same with me bg1999. my school's enrollment took a dip, I am in my 7th year and am an ATR. Never a U rating. Sadly, in my mid 30's, I am a dinosaur for this job

  11. Remove mayoral control of Education. The end to the disgust and hatred for the mayor and his corrupt administration would increase both physical and mental health not only with regard to teachers, parents and students, but all New Yorkers. The city would shine like it has not seen since Bloomberg and his puppets took office. In the meantime, trust no one.

  12. I am an ATR who was slapped with a U rating because the principal hated the teacher who I was assigned to co teach with. She was hell bent on giving that teacher who served in that same school for 20 years, a U rating. Now that teacher has achieved 20 years of S and S ++ ratings. The story is they both have a personal vendetta before I came and the principal wanted to show the teacher what's kicking, so she started a paper trail on the teacher.

    I was placed in the class as part of the big picture. "Let's provide the teacher with help so we can say that she is not managing well." I was co-teaching with Ms. C for six months and I saw no where that she needed help. The principal called in another professional to help in classroom management. The man, although he did not say it explicitly, was trying to give us clues that he did not see a problem, but you know, he was getting paid, so....

    At the end of the school year in June, the teacher along with 4 other teachers was called to the office and told that they are receiving a U. I was not called. So the rest of the school will be getting an S. Somebody must have told her that if both of us (Ms. C and myself) are co- teachers, wouldn't it look funny that you give one an S and give the other a U. So on the last Wednesday of school she called me to the office and said Ms. L I am changing your S to a U because I heard that you came in late yesterday and signed an earlier time (She was absent). That how I became U rated. The other teachers were shocked. What is worse, She held my rating sheet (others received theirs the week before) until the last hour of the last day of school, even though i asked her repeatedly for it. By the time I get it (near the close of business) and went down the office , she was gone for the day, or better yet for the whole Summer holiday.

    What is that??????????? Can somebody tell me what's going on?

  14. Why not a special retirement arrangement for all ATR teachers with 15 or more years regardless their ages with pensions at 33% of their final salaries? Similar to disability retirement. Maybe some ATR teachers will be so frustrated to go along with. ATR teachers with less than 15 years don't make much and are not expensive to keep. This arrangement will save NYC a lot of money as those senior teachers collect high salaries and latter on high pensions.

  15. It all boils down to "POLITICS.' It's not about our children it's about their BIG EGOS, and about saving money, so they can put the money into their pockets.
